Pernegg demonstration turbine

The demonstration turbine in Pernegg is a fascinating technical exhibit on the subject of hydropower. It serves as a vivid example of energy generation by hydropower plants, showing how water is converted into electrical energy. Visitors can take a close look at how the turbine works and learn more about the history of hydropower in the region.

In a light-flooded glass structure, we show you a complete historical Voith Francis turbine set with a Siemens Schuckert three-phase current generator.

Austria’s first turbine museum

One of the three original power plant turbines can be seen as a demonstration turbine in an exhibition building flooded with light near Pernegg powerhouse. The turbine museum embodies the spirit of local workmanship and the technical pioneering spirit that electrified Styria at that time.

During your visit, you will discover the astonishing size of the plant above and below ground. You can reach what is usually covered by the Mur River in comfort and stay dry during the tour.

Guided tours of the turbine museum

With its three turbines, the Styrian Pernegg power plant on the Mur River was Austria’s most powerful run-of-river power plant when it was commissioned in 1928. Today, three modern Kaplan turbines run alongside the demonstration turbine, generating electricity for 35,000 Styrian households.
