The Kaprun high mountain reservoirs are located in a high-alpine region. Please note the following important points:

Always wear suitable footwear and clothing.
Bring enough food and beverages.
Critically assess your fitness and experience level before choosing one of the high-alpine routes.
Research the length and difficulty of the planned route in advance.
Research weather forecasts, road conditions and snow conditions before the trip and choose your equipment accordingly.

The starting point for many routes is the Mooserboden at 2,040 metres above sea level. Whether you’re opting for a relaxing hike with your family or planning a more challenging mountain tour, find out more about the numerous hiking routes now. Herb trail

The herb trail leads from Mooserboden reservoir to the cosy Fürthermoar Alm. Along the trail, you can discover the unique floral and plant life of the Hohe Tauern. The hiking trail offers breathtaking views over the Hohe Tauern mountain landscape, the Wasserfallboden reservoir, and the Steinernes Meer.

The herb trail is also ideal for families with a 45-minute walk (one way) and an altitude difference of 237 metres. Closed shoes with non-slip soles are essential.

Your hike starts at the Mooserboden bus station. The hiking trail is signposted continuously to Fürthermoar Alm. Once at the Alm, you have the option to take the bus to the inclined lift or return to the starting point. Tip: The hike is also possible in the opposite direction. Just get off at the Fuerthermoar Alm stop on the uphill ride to Mooserboden.

Mountain bus to Mooserboden

From June 2025, you will be able to book a spot in the popular mountain bus again. Every weekend from June to September, the morning bus departs from the Kesselfall ticket office at 6:45 a.m. for the Mooserboden reservoir at 2,040 metres above sea level. Sign up, get on and save time for your climb!

Höhenburg climbing arena

Mooser-Mandl, Drossen-Hex, and Limberg-Zwerg – three via ferratas in varying levels of difficulty were drilled into the rock of the historic Höhenburg. The well-preserved iron ladders from the former mountaineering school were even integrated on the “Limberg-Zwerg” via ferrata. The key point called the “Zwergenleiter” (dwarf’s ladder) in difficulty level C is waiting to be mastered in this easy via ferrata.

All three climbs end at the top of the Höhenburg lookout point, which is located between the Drossen dam and the Mooser dam. A camera should definitely be in every climber’s backpack, as the via ferratas in the high alpine setting with the high mountain reservoirs in the background are a unique backdrop for athletes and people looking for relaxation. The descent back to the dam wall is via the leisurely Höhenburg hiking trail.

MOBO 107 dam via ferrata

MOBO 107 is the world’s highest via ferrata on a dam wall. A small flying fox leads to the start of the dam via ferrata. After a single stile ladder, steep cables and steps, a cable bridge awaits you at the end. The “Stoabergblick” viewing platform in the middle of the via ferrata is ideal for a small rest. The most demanding part of the via ferrata is the “Swing”, which can also be bypassed. The via ferrata on the dam wall is in A-B level of difficulty with a C version (Swing).

The via ferrata is accessible every day during the opening hours. It can also be climbed with a state-approved mountain guide, on request.

World’s highest via ferrata on a dam wall

MOBO 107 is the world’s highest via ferrata on a dam wall. A stay in the Zell am See-Kaprun holiday region can be combined perfectly with a visit to the reservoirs and a via ferrata experience in a class of its own. The MOBO 107 owes its name to the Mooserboden and the dam with the same name, which is 107 m high and almost 500 m long.

At the info point near the Mooserboden kiosk, you can hire via ferrata sets every day during the opening hours. Via ferrata set, helmet and gloves: €18 per person
