Schlegeis Alpine Road experience in the Zillertal Valley in the Tyrolean Alps

The Schlegeis Alpine Road starts in the idyllic mountaineering village of Ginzling and takes you to one of the most beautiful destinations in the Zillertal Alps. Hiking, climbing and adventure – all around the emerald green Schlegeis Reservoir.

The Schlegeis Alpine Road features hairpin bends, roaring waterfalls and unforgettable views. At an altitude of 1,800 m, Schlegeis Reservoir is the starting point for many hikes and outdoor activities in the high mountains. A tour of the 131-metre-high Schlegeis Dam gives you a special opportunity to take a look behind the scenes of electricity generation.

From a distance, we look out over the reservoir in Schlegeis in spring.

We are open daily from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. from 16th May until 31st October.

Schlegeis Alpine Road Experience

The Schlegeis Alpine Road, which is about 13 km long, will take you high up into the mountain world of the Zillertal Alps. The unique panoramic view of the surrounding three-thousand-metre peaks makes the Schlegeis Reservoir a special highlight. A walk along the banks of the river allows families and seniors to enjoy the outdoors in complete relaxation. Fans of hiking can enjoy the numerous routes and climbing routes. Meanwhile, cosy huts invite you to stop and enjoy regional cuisine near the reservoir.

Camping ban at the Schlegeis reservoir

Please note that camping is not permitted along the entire Schlegeis Alpine Road or in the car parks at the Schlegeis reservoir. If you are planning a multi-day tour with an overnight stay in a hut, buy a parking ticket and place it behind the windscreen.

Schlegeis Alpine Road opening hours

2025 Season: 16th May to 31st October

May/June: daily from 7:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m.

July/August: daily from 6:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m.

September/October: daily from 7:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m.

Arriving by public transport

Traffic has increased dramatically in recent years. VERBUND and its regional partners have therefore set themselves the goal of gradually reducing traffic and environmental pollution.

We recommend arriving by public transportation between June and September. From Mayrhofen station, you can take line 4102 to the Schlegeis Reservoir and back in an environmentally friendly way and without having to change trains at Ginzling.

Mountain bus

For mountaineers, an early ascent is offered on line 4102 from Mayrhofen.

Period: Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 4th July until 7th September

Departure from Mayrhofen station: 5:30 A.m.

Arrival at Schlegeis Reservoir: 6:20 A.m.

Arriving in a private vehicle

General information

The Schlegeis reservoir is accessed exclusively via the Schlegeis Alpine Road, subject to a toll. The route is controlled by traffic lights and the waiting time is 15–30 minutes.

Arriving by car/motorcycle

From Mayrhofen, travel along Zillertal Straße through Ginzling to the Breitlahner toll station. From the toll station, follow the Schlegeis Alpine Road uphill for about 7 km to the reservoir. Free parking is available in the front and rear areas of the site.

Arriving by coach

For all coaches, a height limit of 3.60 m and a length limit of 13 m applies from the Breitlahner toll station onwards.

Multi-day parking

The toll fee includes parking for the day of ascent until midnight. If you are planning a multi-day tour with an overnight stay in a cabin, buy a parking ticket and place it clearly visible behind the windscreen.

Tip: Buy tickets in advance online

On busy days, parking spaces at the Schlegeis Reservoir can become overcrowded. If this is case, you may be unable to exit with your own vehicle for a few hours.

We offer the option of buying an online ticket so that you can visit the Schlegeis Reservoir on your chosen day. This allows you to check availability and book at any time in advance in the online shop. Click here for online booking.
